J-1 Scholar Health Insurance –
Fully DOS compliant from day one

Starting your academic mission in the U.S. means stepping into new challenges – including your health coverage.
If you’re coming as a J-1 Scholar, you’re required to carry specific health insurance coverage to meet U.S. Department of State regulations.
You need insurance that not only protects your health but also meets federal requirements and fits your personal needs – possibly for yourself and your family.

Good to know…

Here are a few key points about health insurance for J-1 Scholars.
Understanding these can help you stay compliant and protected during your time in the U.S.

Do I really need insurance as a J-1 Scholar?

Yes – the U.S. Department of State requires all J-1 visa holders to maintain insurance that meets specific minimum standards. Without it, your sponsor is required to end your program.

What are the minimum coverage requirements?

You must have:
• $100,000 per accident or illness
• Medical evacuation: $50,000
• Repatriation of remains: $25,000
• A deductible no higher than $500
These must be in effect from day one of your program. Read more

What about my spouse and children?

If your spouse or children hold J-2 visas, they must be covered by insurance that meets the same requirements. Our plans offer flexible family coverage options.

Can I use my university’s plan?

Sometimes – but many university plans are for enrolled students only. Scholars often need to purchase their own separate coverage.

Do I need coverage before I arrive?

Yes – your insurance should begin on or before your program start date (DS-2019). You may need to show proof when applying for your visa or checking in with your sponsor.

What happens in an emergency?

Our plans offer access to nationwide PPO networks, so you can get care quickly – and you can include extensive virtual healthcare services for non-urgent issues.

• $100,000 per accident or illness
• $50,000 medical evacuation

What about my spouse or children? +
If your dependents hold J-2 visas, they are also required to have insurance that meets the same federal standards. We offer flexible family coverage to make this easy for you.
Can I use my university’s insurance plan? +
Sometimes, but not always. Many university insurance plans are for enrolled students only, not for visiting scholars. Be sure to check with your program sponsor.
What documents do I need to show proof of insurance? +
You’ll receive a confirmation email, an ID card, and your full policy documents right after enrollment. These can be used for visa checks, sponsor verification, or program registration.
When should my coverage start? +
Your coverage must begin no later than the start date listed on your DS-2019 form – and continue through the end of your program. Gaps in coverage may lead to non-compliance.
