What international students need to know about waivers and coverage.
Is this insurance accepted by UC San Diego?
Yes. Our plans are approved by UC San Diego and meet all UC SHIP waiver requirements. Many F-1 and J-1 students successfully waive UC SHIP each year using these plans.
What if my waiver request is denied?
No problem. If UCSD doesn’t accept your waiver for any reason, you can cancel your insurance before it starts and get a full refund.
How do I submit the waiver?
Easy. First, buy your plan. Then complete the UCSD waiver form and send it to the school by the listed deadline. Check the instructions and dates in yellow box below to stay on track.
Should I choose a plan with a lower deductible?
It can be worth it. Although plans with lower deductibles cost a bit more per month, they reduce what you pay out of pocket before insurance covers your care – often saving you money overall if you need medical services.
Can I still use the Student Health Center if I waive?
Definitely. You’ll have full access to UCSD’s Student Health Center with no deductible, copay, or coinsurance required.
