How to apply for OPT
Practical help for international students getting ready to work in the U.S.

Step 1: Talk to your DSO
Your Designated School Official (DSO) is your starting point. Let them know you're planning to apply for OPT so they can check your eligibility and update your SEVIS record.

Step 2: Complete Form I-765
Submit Form I-765 to apply for work authorization. You can file online via your USCIS account. Make sure every detail is accurate! Don’t forget: You’ll also need a new I-20 with the OPT request from your DSO.

Step 3: Pay the application fee
The current fee is $410. You can pay by check, money order, or credit card using Form G-1450. Many students prefer checks to avoid processing delays.

Step 4: Submit passport-style photos
You’ll need two identical, recent, color photos taken within the last 30 days. Write your name and SEVIS ID on the back using pencil or light ink.

Step 5: Collect supporting documents
- I-94 travel record
- OPT-recommended I-20 (signed by you and your DSO)
- Previous EAD cards (if applicable)
- Passport ID page and F-1 visa
- Past CPT/OPT I-20s (if any)

Step 6: Send your application
Upload your documents online or mail them to USCIS. You'll receive a receipt number to track your application. Store it safely!

Step 7: Check your status
Track your progress at the USCIS Case Tracker. If they need more info, they’ll send a Request for Evidence (RFE). Respond quickly!
