Insurance Requirements for J-1 Visa Holders
As defined by the U.S. Department of State (DOS)
All J-1 exchange visitors – including students, scholars, professors, and specialists – are required by federal regulation to have health insurance that meets specific standards. These rules are in place to ensure adequate coverage in case of illness, accidents, or emergencies during your stay in the U.S.
Minimum Coverage Requirements
According to 22 CFR § 62.14, the insurance plan must meet the following criteria:
Requirement | Minimum Standard |
---|---|
Medical Benefits per Accident or Illness | $100,000 or more |
Repatriation of Remains | $25,000 minimum |
Medical Evacuation to Home Country | $50,000 minimum |
Deductible per Accident or Illness | Not to exceed $500 |
Insurance Provider Rating | A- or higher (A.M. Best or equivalent) |
These standards apply to both J-1 visa holders and their J-2 dependents.
Additional Key Points
- Coverage must be in effect from the start to the end of your program.
- Your program sponsor is responsible for ensuring compliance. Lack of coverage may lead to program termination.
- Insurance must be issued by a U.S.-licensed provider with an accepted financial rating.
